Waffle Cardigan Crochet Pattern
Create a warm textured crochet cardigan using a soft, chunky yarn and a classic waffle stitch pattern. The original sample was made with Papatya Velvet Cake 300-03 and is suitable for intermediate crocheters.
Instructions
Getting Started
Make a foundation chain of 110 stitches.
Row 1
Work double crochet stitches evenly across the foundation chain.
Row 2
Continue working double crochet stitches across the row.
Waffle Stitch
From Row 3, begin working the waffle stitch pattern, following the crochet chart below.
Keep 2 double crochet stitches at each edge while continuing the waffle stitch across the centre section.
Divide the Body
Continue until the piece measures approximately 35 cm. At this point, divide the work into the front and back sections and continue working the waffle stitch pattern.
Back
Continue the back section for approximately another 21 cm, then finish off.
Front Sections and Collar
Work the two front sections separately and shape the collar as shown in the original construction.
Join the front sections to the back at the shoulders.
Sleeves
Pick up stitches evenly around each arm opening. Work the sleeves in the round so that they remain seamless.
Continue until the sleeves reach your preferred length, then finish off.
Yarn Update
The original cardigan was made with Papatya Velvet Cake 300-03, which is no longer produced.
Recommended current alternative: Papatya Cuddly Chenille. Its soft, velvety texture makes it a suitable option for creating a cosy textured cardigan.
Papatya Cuddly Chenille is not an exact replacement for the discontinued Velvet Cake, so check your gauge before beginning. You may need to adjust the hook size and total quantity to achieve the required measurements.
Finished Cardigan
The finished cardigan combines a relaxed shape with the raised texture of the waffle stitch.
Waffle Stitch Detail
The waffle stitch creates a raised geometric texture by combining standard crochet stitches with post stitches.

Use the chart below as a visual guide for the waffle stitch pattern and the beginning of the cardigan body.
Choose Yarn for Your Waffle Cardigan
Papatya Velvet Cake is discontinued. Papatya Cuddly Chenille is a current soft and velvety alternative that can be used to create a similar cosy cardigan.
